As shown in the photos below, fifth grade art students are currently creating the forms of their sea animal relief sculptures with wadded paper and tape on one side of pieces of Styrofoam, which they cut out with hacksaw blades. Some students are shown in the process of sawing. Thin parts of the animal forms are reinforced with popsicle sticks and tape. Paper mache and glitter glue will be applied to the surface later. To hang their sculptures, students will make hooks with paper clips and screws.
Students used the grid method to draw from photos of sea animals. Some of their drawings appear below. The lines of the drawings were transferred to Styrofoam sheets.
