WHAT TO EXPECT IN

THIRD GRADE AT SPCS

Third grade marks the move from our primary to our intermediate division at St. Peter Catholic School. We see huge strides in student independence in this grade and focus on providing opportunities for virtuous whole person development as well as continued academic growth.

THIRD GRADE READING, ENGLISH, AND SPELLING

English focuses on parts of speech and writing, using the 6+1 Traits of Writing Program.

Stories are read in class. Comprehension and vocabulary are tested. Novels are read aloud to the class daily.

Students continue using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program in Third Grade.  Students are to read 500 pages each marking period.

Weekly spelling lists will focus on rules and patterns. A test is given each Friday.

THIRD GRADE RELIGION

Celebrating our faith is integrated into everything we do at Saint Peter Catholic School. Religion is taught by Mrs. Harris for 30 minutes four days a week. However, all of our teachers keep Jesus at the center of their classroom.

In Religion Class, Third Grade students will:

  • Grow in faith
  • Learn stories from the Bible, understand God’s laws, serve Jesus and others, learn about the saints, pray the Rosary, and participate in Mass.
  • Have 5th grade prayer partners and attend weekly Mass with them

Third Grade is also when we begin active participation in service projects, marked by the first year of our “soup service. Third graders bring canned goods to make soup for the JOY Soup Kitchen in Greenville each Thursday, a tradition going back 25 years.
