WHAT TO EXPECT IN
SECOND GRADE AT SPCS
Second grade is a time of great growth for our students, both academically and spiritually. Our students continue to build on their reading and math skills, while also beginning their journey in language arts and social studies. And of course, second grade is a big year sacramentally for our students with both First Reconciliation and First Communion in this year!
As with our other primary grades, there are two Second Grade homeroom classes, each with a lead teacher and an assistant, providing the perfect balance between individualized attention and learning with and from their peers in groups.
SECOND GRADE CURRICULUM
ACADEMIC BEGINNINGS
FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
SECOND GRADE MATH
Students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade learn math using Savvas Experience Math.
Second Grade focuses on four critical areas: extending understanding of base-ten notation; building fluency with addition and subtraction; using standard units of measurement; describing and analyzing shapes.
Students will memorize addition and subtraction facts up to 20. Timed tests each Friday will assess their mastery in fact fluency.
SECOND GRADE READING AND WRITING
Our balanced reading instruction in Second Grade uses reading aloud, guided reading and independent reading. We use trade books, leveled readers, and self-selected “just right” books (books your child selects on his/her level). Grades will be taken from reading response journals, reading logs, book reports, and independent reading activities.
Students start using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program in Second Grade. Students read at least two AR books and pass the corresponding tests each month.
Second Graders embark on their first true research project at SPCS with the Famous American project.
SECOND GRADE RELIGION
Celebrating our faith is integrated into everything we do at Saint Peter Catholic School. Religion is taught by Mrs. Harris for 30 minutes four days a week. However, all of our teachers keep Jesus at the center of their classroom.
In Religion Class, Second Grade students will:
- Grow in faith
- Learn stories from the Bible, understand God’s laws, serve Jesus and others, learn about the saints, pray the Rosary, and participate in Mass.
- Have 8th grade prayer partners and attend weekly Mass with them
Second Grade is a special time because of the preparation and celebration of First Communion and Reconciliation, which are integrated into the religion curriculum. All baptized Catholic Second Graders will be eligible to receive these sacraments.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Students in Second Grade have outdoor recess each morning and afternoon. We also supplement learning through special projects and field trips. The fall field trip is to A Time for Science in Grifton. In March, we visit Sylvan Heights Bird Park. In May, we visit Beaufort (also known as “the best field trip ever”).
We also have several celebrations through the year, including a Christmas party, Valentine’s Day Party, and End of the Year Party. Other activities the students get to enjoy include service projects, the Scholastic Book Fair in the fall and spring, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Catholic Schools Week, Spirit Week in February, and Field Day in May.
