Third, fourth, and fifth graders in Mr. Bell’s art classes at Saint Peter Catholic School collaboratively write, test, and edit programming code for Lego Spike Prime robots on Chromebooks. The math-based coding challenges featured in this video which appears below, show students in the spring semesters of 2025 and 2026. Students work with positive and negative degrees for programming clockwise and counterclockwise turns to achieve a goal. Our students use math, spatial reasoning, and teamwork to venture into the art-related field of engineering.
Students of Saint Peter Catholic School’s After School Robotics program participate in a variety of robotics activities. This video (shown below), with clips from the past two school years, begins with students playing a game we call “Robo Ball”. After writing line-follower code with the Lego Education Spike app, students tried to catch as many balls as possible. While learning to create code with proportional correction gyro loops, students are shown testing their code on robots. After completing a complex coding challenge, students chose to build and then run autonomous or remote-control racing robots. Mr. Bell, the Saint Peter Catholic School Art Tech Teacher, supervises this robotics activity for interested middle school students. Mrs. Ju, a first grade assistant teacher, frequently assists during our after school sessions.
