- [Mousey Heads: Who's Who?](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/mousey-heads-whos-who/): First graders of the 1B and 1S art classes proudly show off their “Mr. and Ms. Mousey Head” paper sculptures in these photos from the December 15th art classes.  In this geometry-based project, students made a paper cone which served as the base form for working creatively with various materials. Although structurally similar, each mouse head has a unique personality, just like the artists who created them.  
- [Riding the Waves in 4P Art](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/riding-the-waves-in-4p-art/): Fourth grade art students have made sculptures depicting sailboats on waves.  This work combines origami with measuring, cutting, and taping paper and plastic straws.  The boats are attached with glue and screws to waves made of wadded paper, cardboard, and tape. The boats and waves are covered with paper mache.  Cotton has been shaped and glued to simulate foam on the waves.

- [Sailing the Seas in 4B Art](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sailing-the-seas-in-4b-art/): Fourth grade art students have been creating sculptures which depict sailboats on waves.  The structures combine origami with measuring, cutting, and taping paper and plastic straws.  The boats are mounted with glue and screws on wave structures composed of wadded paper, cardboard, and tape.  A paper mache skin coats the boats and waves.  Cotton represents the foam on the waves.
- [6T Cloth Animal Sculptures](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/6t-cloth-animal-sculptures/): Sixth grade Art Tech students have recently been creating cloth pillow sculptures.  After transferring their drawings to a folded cloth, students sewed the running stitch along the edge of their designs, except for a pull-through hole.  Then, the main form of each pillow was turned inside-out and stuffed with poly-fill.  The whip stitch sealed the pillow form.  Surface features were made with buttons, carefully cut scraps of cloth, and yarn.
- [6B Stuffed Animal Zoo](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/6b-stuffed-animal-zoo/): In Art Tech class, 6th graders have been designing and creating cloth sculptures.  They transferred their drawings to one side of a folded cloth and used the running stitch along the entire edge of the form, except for a pull-through hole.  After cutting outside of the stitching line, the main form of each pillow was turned inside-out and stuffed with poly-fill.  The whip stitch sealed the pillow form.  Students also learned to sew on buttons for eyes.  Other surface features have been made with carefully cut scraps of cloth and yarn that have been attached with glue or stitches.
- [2nd Grade Crosses in the Church](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/2nd-grade-crosses-in-the-church/): Shown here are 2nd graders bringing their Cross sculptures into the church on the day of the 8th Grade Saints Program, as well as the entire presentation of Crosses on the steps around the altar.  The Saints Program was held on November 3rd. The 2nd graders rolled all of the cylindrical paper components of these sculptures and measured, cut, taped, and glued the various parts. Students chose the colors with which they designed their crosses.  
- [Reaching for the Sky in 3rd Grade Art](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/reaching-for-the-sky-in-3rd-grade-art/): Third grade art students have recently been building and designing paper and cardboard airplanes. Structural reasoning, measurement, symmetry, wing design, and considerations of color were important factors as students built these sculptures. Shown here are some jets by 3rd graders, photos from art class, and a video of students launching their airplanes.
- [5th Grade Sea Animals in Progress](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/5th-grade-sea-animals-in-progress/): As shown in the photos below, fifth grade art students are currently creating the forms of their sea animal relief sculptures with wadded paper and tape on one side of pieces of Styrofoam, which they cut out with hacksaw blades.  Some students are shown in the process of sawing.  Thin parts of the animal forms are reinforced with popsicle sticks and tape.  Paper mache and glitter glue will be applied to the surface later.  To hang their sculptures, students will make hooks with paper clips and screws.   Students used the grid method to draw from photos of sea animals.

- [Kindergarten Corn Test and 8th Grade Art Tech](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/kindergarten-corn-test-and-8th-grade-art-tech/): Kindergarteners are currently making paper maracas.  After rolling paper cylinders and sealing corn kernels inside with paper end caps, students test their seals by doing the shake test.  If corn flies out, a hole needs to be patched with paper and tape.  During this project, students learn about cylinders by constructing them.  Kindergarteners engage in challenging spatial/structural problem solving as they draw, cut, trim, patch, and secure the lids of their maracas.  Click the video below to see the KB and KE art classes test their maracas.  Will the corn stay inside?  Since these videos were made, students have begun

- [Sailboats in Progress and Stations of the Cross](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sailboats-in-progress-and-stations-of-the-cross-2/): The 4B and 4P art classes appear below with sailboats they have constructed with paper, tape and drinking straws.  The hulls and paper mast supports of the boats required precise folding and measurements.  Soon, students will create a wave-like base with paper and cardboard upon which their boats will rest.  The boats and waves will be given a colorful paper mache skin. - [Paper Sculpture and Digitally Edited Drawings](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/paper-sculpture-and-digitally-edited-drawingss/): Most 8th graders have recently finished the Stations of the Cross project in Mr. Bell’s Art Tech class. The Renaissance-based grid method was used to create free-hand pencil and ink drawings of illustrations by contemporary artist Shari Van Vranken. Students edited and colored photos of their drawings with the Sketchbook app on their iPads. The 1B and 1S art students are shown below proudly displaying the base structures of their Mr. and Ms. Mousey Head paper sculptures.  In this geometry-based art project, students internalize the concept of the cone by making one from a paper plate.  The cone serves as the
- [2nd and 8th Grade Art: Reflecting our Faith](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/2nd-and-8th-grade-art-reflecting-our-faith/): Some of our 8th graders have recently finished the Stations of the Cross project in Mr. Bell’s Art Tech class, while others continue to develop their drawings.  Students used the Renaissance-based grid method to create free-hand pencil and ink drawings which they have edited and colored electronically on iPads. Illustrations by contemporary artist Shari Van Vranken served as model images for this student art. Second grade art students are shown below near the end of a class during which they were finishing the construction and assembly of the basic cross shape of their paper, cardboard, and paper mache sculptures.  Students

- [Puppet Videos and Color Wheel Drawings](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/puppet-videos-and-color-wheel-drawings/): Seventh grade Art Tech students made animal hand puppets which are featured in their short music videos.  Several students have shot video outside the art room for use as backgrounds when applying the greenscreen technique.  Students  edited their videos in the iMovie app on their iPads, and added iMovie soundtracks.  On the name labels of the videos below, if there are more names than there are puppets, the final name is the videographer. Second grade art students recently drew “Color Wheel Flower Gardens” with pencils, colored pencils, and permanent markers.  The dominant flower in each composition has petals that show
- [Cross Pendant Blessing](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/cross-pendant-blessing/): Students of the 7th grade Art Tech classes designed cross pendants with the Tinkercad computer-aided design app. After viewing various Celtic-style cross designs for inspiration, students used this engineering software to express their own creativity. These 3D printed crosses are worn on a string or thin chain. Fr. Magee blessed the pendants at Mass on May 14.

- [Doggies from 3H and Flower Paintings from KE](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/doggies-from-3h-and-flower-paintings-from-ke/): Third grade art students used Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software to make virtual models of dogs, as well as doghouses and pens, on their Chromebooks.  A selection of works by students of the 3H class appears below. Kindergarten art students have learned to make symmetrical paper flowers by folding, cutting, and gluing colored paper.  Tempera paint was applied to the card stock base to the create grass, stems, and leaves in these artworks from the KE class. 
- [Who Let the Dogs Out? Woof! Woof!](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/who-let-the-dogs-out-woof-woof/): Third grade art students recently created virtual models of dogs, as well as doghouses and pens, with Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software on Chromebooks.  By using this geometry-based digital tool, students learned that lines can be used to form planes and that planes can become components of complex structures. - [Stations of the Cross](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/stations-of-the-cross-4/): Eighth graders in Mr. Bell’s Art Tech classes used the Renaissance-based grid method to create free-hand pencil and ink drawings of the Stations of the Cross which they colored electronically on iPads. Illustrations by contemporary artist Shari Van Vranken served as models for this student art. The 8th grade classes did such a good job on the Stations of the Cross project this year that Mr. Bell decided to show two artworks for each station, instead of just one, as we have done in the past. The artwork was posted on the playground for the school-wide Stations of the Cross during Holy Week.
- [A Roman Temple and Springtime Butterflies](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/a-roman-temple-and-springtime-butterflies/): First grade art students have learned about symmetry by drawing half of a butterfly on a folded piece of paper, cutting it out, and then unfolding it.  Crayons were used to color the butterflies.  Flowers and other landscape components were made with cut colored paper.  Students used glue sticks to affix the butterflies and the other objects to a background paper. A Tinkercad model by 6th grader Henry Madubeze and his resulting 3D print are shown below.  His design was inspired by the entrance to the Pantheon in Rome.  Henry is a member of our after-school Robotics and Computer-Aided Design
- [Sailing into Computer-Aided Design](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sailing-into-computer-aided-design/): Fourth grade art students have recently made virtual 3D models of sailboats in landscapes with Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software on Chromebooks.  During work on this project, students learned tool usage and design techniques.  Students made their sailboats and landscapes primarily with the rectangle, arc, and line tools. They used other tools to extrude (push-pull), move, resize, color, and rotate forms.  
- [3D Prints and Computer-Aided Design](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/3d-prints-and-computer-aided-design/): Fourth grade art students have been making virtual 3D models of sailboats in landscapes with Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software on Chromebooks. The Tinkercad church models shown below were designed by eighth graders Cooper Worthington and Aaron Lin.  The resulting 3D prints also appear here.  Cooper and Aaron are members of our middle school robotics and CAD group.
- [3D Printed Church Designs and Birds in Flight](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/3d-printed-church-designs-and-birds-in-flight/): Watercolor paintings centered around paper bird constructions were recently created by 2nd grade art students. Sections of the paper birds were drawn, cut, and assembled with glue.  Watercolored areas and linear crayon patterns in the sky echo the shapes of the birds and help unify the compositions. The 3D prints and computer-aided designs of churches shown below are by 6th grader Christopher Tulis and 8th grader Lucas Mora. They are members of our middle school robotics and CAD group, which meets on Thursdays and Fridays.

- [Faith-inspired 3D Prints](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/faith-inspired-3d-prints/): Students of the 7th grade Art Tech classes have designed cross pendants with the Tinkercad computer-aided design app. After viewing various Celtic-style cross designs for inspiration, students used this engineering software to express their own creativity.  These 3D printed crosses can be worn on a string or thin chain. - [Kindergarten Giraffe Paintings](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/kindergarten-giraffe-paintings/): Kindergarten art students combined the tracings of cardboard rectangles to draw the bodies of their giraffes.  Students learned that simple shapes can be used to make more complex forms.  Tempera paint was applied with cotton swabs and fingers.
- [Cross Pendant Designs for 3D Printing](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/cross-pendant-designs-for-3d-printing/): Seventh grade Art Tech students have recently been designing cross pendants with the Tinkercad computer-aided design app on their iPads.  Students learned various techniques for modifying, manipulating, and combining the most basic shapes of the Tinkercad toolkit to develop the complex forms of their own unique designs.  Shown below are a selection of designs by 7th graders that they created for 3D printing.  The 3D printed models will be wearable as necklace pendants on a string or thin chain.
- [Aquatic Life Sculptures from 5D](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/aquatic-life-sculptures-from-5d/): Students of the 5th grade art classes have made relief sculptures of aquatic animals. The grid method was employed for drawing from photos of sea creatures.  Students transferred their drawings to Styrofoam sheets which they cut out with saws.  The volumetric form of each animal was sculpted with paper and tape.  The skin was made with paper mache and glitter glue.  In the 5D art class photos shown below, most students are performing the final step of the project, which is making paper eyes for their sea animals.

- [Kindergarten Maracas](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/kindergarten-maracas/): The KB and KE art classes are shown here with their recently completed paper maracas.  This geometry-oriented sculpture project helps students understand the concept of the cylinder by making one.  The cylinder is the base form upon which students used paper, unpopped popcorn, cotton, glue, and tape to express their creativity. - [Cross Sculptures and Stuffed Animals](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/cross-sculptures-and-stuffed-animals/): Second grade art students are shown below as they apply the finishing touches of paper mache to their cross sculptures.  Students built these structures with cardboard pieces and colored card stock which they measured, cut, and taped.  Cloth pillow sculptures by sixth graders are shown here.  In this multistep design and construction project, students employed fine motor skills and spatial-structural reasoning as they created 2-dimensional plans on paper which eventually became 3-dimensional pillow forms.  Various sewing stitches and fabric glue were used to complete these artworks.   
- [6th Grade Cloth Sculptures](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/6th-grade-cloth-sculptures/): In Art Tech class, sixth graders have been working creatively in the medium of cloth sculpture.  Students developed designs which they transferred to one side of a folded cloth and turned into pillow forms.  Students used the running stitch along the entire edge of the form, except for a pull-through hole.  After cutting outside of the stitching line, the main form of each pillow was turned inside-out and stuffed with poly-fill.  The whip stitch sealed the pull-through hole.  Students also learned to sew on buttons for eyes.  Other surface features of the sculptures have been made mainly with carefully cut
- [Religious Art and Sea Animal Sculptures in Progress](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/religious-art-and-sea-animal-sculptures-in-progress/): Eighth grader William Edwards recently completed a beautiful drawing of the fourteenth Station of the Cross.  Using the grid method, he created a freehand pencil and ink drawing of an illustration by artist Shari van Vranken.  The final image, which you see here, is a photo of his drawing that he colored with the Sketchbook app on his iPad. As shown in the photos below, fifth grade art students are currently applying paper mache to the surface of their relief sculptures of sea animals.  Students used the grid method to draw from photos. - [3rd Grade Jets and 2nd Grade Crosses](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/3rd-grade-jets-and-2nd-grade-crosses/): Third graders of the 3D and 3H classes are shown launching their paper and cardboard jets in the video below. This project is one of a series of design and construction assignments that helps students develop spatial intelligence and structural skills.  Students must make the component parts from basic materials, and then combine the parts in a way that creates overall structural integrity. - [3rd Grade Paper and Cardboard Jets](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/3rd-grade-paper-and-cardboard-jets/): Third grade art students have recently been building and designing paper and cardboard airplanes. Structural reasoning, measurement, symmetry, wing design, and considerations of color were important factors as students built these sculptures. Soon, the classes will take their jets outside and launch (throw) them. 
- [Paintings, Drawings, and Pillow Sculptures](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/paintings-drawings-and-pillow-sculptures/): A selection of paintings, drawings, and cloth pillow sculptures by 8th graders are featured this week.  Several students drew and painted while observing photos of work by established artists.  Ramzy Kaoud combined the imagery of two historically important artists.  He did pencil and ink drawings of a rooster by Picasso and head studies by Leonardo daVinci. He photographed his drawings and used them in a thought-provoking, surreal, digital artwork which he developed in the Sketchbook app on his iPad. 
- [Sea Animal Relief Sculptures in Progress](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sea-animal-relief-sculptures-in-progress/): Fifth grade art students are currently creating relief sculptures of sea animals.  Students used the grid method to draw from photos. Some of their drawings are shown below. They transferred their drawings of aquatic animals to Styrofoam sheets which they have been cutting out with hacksaw blades.  One end of the blade has been wrapped with paper and tape to make a protective handle.   The form of each animal will be built with paper and tape on the Styrofoam base, which most students are reinforcing with splints made of popsicle sticks and tape.   The back of the sculpture

Some of our 8th graders have recently used their sewing skills to create animal pillows.  The materials are felt cloth, thread, poly-fill stuffing, and buttons.

- [Works in Progress: Paper Mouse Head Sculptures](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/works-in-progress-paper-mouse-head-sculptures/): The first graders of the 1B and 1S art classes proudly display the base structures of their Mr. and Ms. Mousey Head paper sculptures.  In this geometry-based art project, students internalize the concept of the cone by making one from a paper plate.  The cone serves as the base form upon which each student will work creatively to give his or her mouse head a unique personality.  During the next few weekly classes, students will use colored tissue paper, a glue/water mixture, yarn, corn, pom poms, and cotton to finish their sculptures.

- [Works in Progress: 2nd Grade Cross Sculptures](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/works-in-progress-2nd-grade-cross-sculptures/): Second grade art students are shown below near the end of a class during which they were finishing the construction and assembly of the basic cross shape of their paper, cardboard, and paper mache sculptures.  Students will soon build support bases and create colorful tassels for the upper ends of the crosses. Second graders will carry these works into the church during the 8th grade All Saints Program later this year.

- [SPCS Friday Robotics 2023-24: Racing Bots](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/spcs-friday-robotics-2023-24-racing-bots/): This video shows students of our school’s Friday Robotics program as they design and run remote-controlled Lego EV3 racing robots. After Friday Robotics students successfully finished their advanced coding challenges in the spring of 2024, they earned the privilege of making racing bots. Mr. Bell, the Saint Peter Catholic School Art Tech Teacher, runs this Friday program for interested middle school students. During the 2023-24 school year, he was assisted during the robotics sessions by Mrs. Ju, a first grade assistant teacher.

- [Paper Hats and Paintings](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/paper-hats-and-paintings/): The Kindergarten and 1st grade art classes are shown below with paper hats that they created.  Kindergarteners taped strips of cardstock together to create the base shape of their funny hats.  Students worked together with classmates to fit the hats on their heads.  They also made cones and cylinders which they taped to the hats.  First graders made origami “Samurai” helmets with large squares of paper.   Prior to working with the large sheets of paper, first graders learned the folding techniques with small squares of printer paper.  The assistant teachers who work with Mr. Bell each week in the kindergarten and 1st grade

- [Color Wheel Flower Gardens](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/color-wheel-flower-gardens/): Second grade art students have recently been drawing “Color Wheel Flower Gardens”.  In this exercise, the dominant flower in the composition has petals that show a 6-part color wheel. The petals have the three traditional primary colors for painters (red, yellow, and blue) and the secondary colors (orange, green, and purple).  The secondary colors appear between the primaries used to make them.  Brown appears in the central circle of the color wheel flowers because various types of brown can be obtained by mixing the three primaries in different proportions.  Black is in the very center of the color wheel flowers
- [Springtime Doggies](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/springtime-doggies/): Third grade art students recently created virtual models of dogs, as well as doghouses and pens, with Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software on Chromebooks.  By using this geometry-based digital tool, students learned that lines can be used to form planes and that planes can become components of complex structures. - [Sea Animal Sculptures and a Castle](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sea-animal-sculptures-and-a-castle/): ​Fifth grade art students have made relief sculptures of aquatic animals. The grid method was employed for drawing from photos of sea animals.  Students transferred their drawings to Styrofoam sheets which they cut out with saws.  The volumetric form of each animal was sculpted with paper and tape.  The skin was made with paper mache and glitter glue. - [Springtime Butterflies](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/springtime-butterflies/): In art class, first graders have learned about symmetry by drawing half of a butterfly on a folded piece of paper, cutting it out, and then unfolding the paper.  Crayons were used to color the butterflies.  Flowers and other landscape components were made with cut colored paper.  Students used glue sticks to affix the butterflies and the other objects to a background paper.

Students worked with pencil and ink to draw Jesus on the shape of the San Damiano cross. People, things, and places for which students are grateful appear within the cross and around Jesus.  Students colored and edited photos of their drawings with the Sketchbook app on their iPads. - [Cross Images, Sailboats, and a Castle](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/cross-images-sailboats-and-a-castle/): Seventh grade Art Tech students have been creating personalized versions of the San Damiano Cross.  This original iconic crucifix painting was created by an unknown artist, possibly a Syrian monk, in Umbria, Italy in the early 1100’s.  A large reproduction of the San Damiano Cross appears on the wall behind the altar in Saint Peter Catholic Church. To create artwork for this project, seventh graders first made pencil and ink drawings of Jesus on the unique shape of the San Damiano cross. People, things, and places for which students are thankful appear in the space of the cross around Jesus.
- [Sailing into Design Technology](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sailing-into-design-technology/): Fourth grade art students have created virtual 3D models of sailboats in a landscape with Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software on Chromebooks.  Students created their sailboat structures by making and altering geometric shapes. Students made copies of their boats and colored them.  They then drew landscapes which include bodies of water.  After placing their boats on the water, the boats were sized and rotated in accordance with students’ intentions for their designs.  Steps in the construction of the boats are shown below in a CAD design by Mila Wilson, whose final work also appears here.

- [Balloons and a Pyramid](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/balloons-and-a-pyramid/): Fifth grade art students have created virtual 3D models of hot-air balloons with Sketch Up for Schools computer-aided design (CAD) software on Chromebooks.  Students drew flat shapes on a vertical rectangular plane to make a half-profile of a balloon. To create the 3D form of the balloon and basket, they spun the half-profile with the “follow me” tool around the path of a circle which was drawn on the ground (perpendicular to the half-profile).   Students made copies of their balloons and colored them.  The groups of balloons were positioned as though they were floating in the sky.  Steps in

- [3D-Printed Cross Pendants](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/3d-printed-cross-pendants/): Fifteen of our 8th graders are shown wearing their 3D-printed cross pendants in the church before Mass on Wednesday, February 7th.  Near the end of their first quarter Art Tech classes, eighth graders designed cross pendants with the Tinkercad computer-aided design app. Completed designs have been 3D printed.  Five other students who finished the project were not in attendance on the day of this photo. The students used jewelry materials and hand tools to make their crosses wearable.

Completed designs have been 3D printed.  A hole for inserting a string or thin chain was designed into the upper section of each cross.  The photo of the cross by Jules shows a string that passes through the top section. - [Sailing on the Waves in 4th Grade Art](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/sailing-on-the-waves-in-4th-grade-art/): Fourth grade art students have recently been creating sculptures which depict sailboats on waves.  The hulls of the boats are origami structures.  The masts are supported by a pyramid-like cardstock form that is carefully measured, cut, and taped in place.  The masts and booms are made of drinking straws.  Each student’s boat is sealed with tape to make it impermeable to the water in the colorful paper mache coating.  The boats are mounted on wave structures composed of wadded paper, cardboard, tape, and paper mache.   The boats are attached to the waves with glue and one Phillips screw.  Cotton is

- [Cell Pillows and Cross Sculptures](https://stpeterscatholicschool.com/cell-pillows-and-cross-sculptures/): Sixth grade art Art Tech students have recently been creating plant and animal cell pillows by using the running stitch and the whip stitch to sew their creations.  The pillow designs of this science-related STEAM project are based on students’ drawings of reference illustrations.  The organelles of the cell pillows were affixed to the surface of the cloth with fabric glue.  Students stuffed their pillows with poly-fill.
